What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device that replaces one or more missing teeth by “bridging” the gap in your smile. It consists of two main components: a pontic, which is the component that fills the empty space, and one or more dental crowns, which are placed over the natural teeth on either side of the gap to anchor the bridge securely in place.

How Does a Dental Bridge Work?

A dental bridge works by anchoring an artificial tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth. For a traditional bridge, we gently reshape those neighboring teeth, take precise impressions, and place a temporary bridge while your permanent one is crafted. Once ready, the final bridge is cemented into place.

What Are the Different Types of Dental Bridges?

There are four main types of dental bridges, each suited to different clinical situations:

  • Traditional Bridges: The most common type, supported by abutment crowns on both adjacent teeth
  • Cantilever Bridges: Supported by a crown on only one neighboring tooth, used when teeth exist on just one side of the gap
  • Maryland Bridges: Held in place with a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of adjacent teeth, typically used for front teeth
  • Implant-Supported Bridges: Anchored to dental implants rather than natural teeth, ideal for patients with three or more consecutive missing teeth

During your consultation, we will recommend the type of bridge that best fits your oral health and the location of the missing teeth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Bridges?

You may be a good candidate for a dental bridge if you have one or more missing teeth, healthy gums, and sufficient bone structure to support the restoration. Strong, healthy teeth on at least one side of the gap are also important, as they serve as anchors for the bridge. Factors such as your age, overall oral health, and the number of missing teeth all help us determine if this approach is right for you.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Bridges?

Most dental insurance plans classify bridges as a major restorative procedure and provide partial coverage. Depending on your plan, insurers typically cover between 40% and 60% of the cost, after deductibles and are subject to your annual maximum benefit. Coverage can vary depending on your specific policy. We recommend contacting your insurer before treatment to understand your specific benefits and any waiting period requirements.

How Long Do Dental Bridges Last?

With proper care, a dental bridge typically lasts between 5 and 15 years, and many last well beyond that. Daily brushing and flossing, cleaning beneath the bridge with floss or interdental brushes, avoiding excessively hard or sticky foods, and attending regular checkups all play a significant role in extending the life of your dental bridge. Some well-maintained bridges can last a decade or longer without issue.
