Gum disease—commonly referred to as periodontal disease, gingivitis, or periodontitis—is an oral health condition that develops when the gums become inflamed or infected. Its severity can range significantly, from mild gingivitis that can be reversed with proper oral hygiene, to advanced periodontitis that affects the bone supporting the teeth and may lead to tooth loss.

Although gum disease is extremely common, early detection is essential. Identifying symptoms at the earliest stages can prevent serious complications such as gum recession, bone loss, and tooth loss. Below, we outline the key signs of gingivitis and periodontitis to help you better recognize gum disease. If you have concerns about your gum health or would like to schedule an appointment with an experienced periodontist in Boston, the team at Boston Dental is here to help.

Symptoms That Can Help You Identify Gum Disease

Gum disease progresses through several stages if left untreated, with symptoms becoming more severe over time. Gingivitis is the earliest stage and is often fully reversible with good oral care. If not addressed, it can progress to early periodontitis, then moderate periodontitis, and eventually advanced periodontitis.

Signs of Gingivitis

  • Swollen Gums: Red, puffy, or tender gums are often the first noticeable sign of gingivitis.
  • Bleeding Gums: If your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, inflammation may be present.
  • Persistent Bad Breath: Bad breath that lingers even after brushing and flossing can be a sign of bacterial buildup.
  • Gum Sensitivity: Discomfort when touching the gums, brushing, or chewing may indicate early gum irritation.

Signs of Periodontitis

  • Receding Gums: Gum recession—when the gums pull away from the teeth—can make teeth appear longer and may indicate the disease has progressed.
  • Loose Teeth: Changes in the way your teeth fit together or teeth that begin to loosen are warning signs of more advanced gum disease.
  • Pus Along the Gum Line: The presence of pus between the teeth and gums is a definitive sign of infection and requires immediate attention.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, it’s important to see a dentist who specializes in periodontics as soon as possible. Early treatment can help stop the progression of gum disease and restore the health of your gums.
